Treatment for
Male Infertility

What Are My Chances of Getting Treated?

The good news is, about 70% of conditions related to male infertility are treatable, and 25% of all cases can be prevented!

The key to this is an accurate diagnosis of the health of your sperm, as well as the causes behind the infertility so that an effective treatment can be tailored for you.

Treatments Depend on the Cause of Infertility

To summarise the causes of male infertility, they are:

  • Low Testosterone Level
  • Infections
  • Varicocele
  • Defects that Block Sperm Passage
  • Certain Medications
  • Environmental Factors
  • Lifestyle Factors
  • Problems with Sexual Intercourse
  • Past Surgeries

Some of the above factors require only lifestyle changes or medication to treat, while others may require surgery or even assisted reproduction technology.

Treatments Include:

Lifestyle Changes

+

Achieving a healthy BMI with ample rest, reduced stress, as well as a healthy diet and an active lifestyle, will go a long way in improving your overall health, which includes sperm production. Quitting alcohol and smoking definitely helps, too.

Hormone Treatment

+

Certain hormone imbalances can affect fertility as they can impact the testes’ ability to produce testosterone, regulate sperm production or cause sexual dysfunction.

These fertility-impacting hormones in men include testosterone, luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). Dr Michael Wong will conduct hormone testing to identify which factor may be off and how best to treat it.

Infection Treatment

+

Antibiotics may be prescribed to treat existing bacterial infections; however, the restoration of fertility may not be guaranteed. For instance, if damage from a sexually transmitted infection has already been done to a reproductive organ, other corresponding treatments may be needed.

Treatment for Intercourse Problems

+

Whether it is erectile dysfunction or pain during sexual intercourse, your urologist will be able to address it effectively. Treatments are usually conservative in most cases.

Surgery

+

For men who have had a vasectomy before, Dr Michael Wong is skilled in reversal vasectomy, and sperm should reappear in semen again after a few months to within a year.

In cases where there is an obstruction to the tubes carrying sperm or semen, or an anatomical defect, it can be surgically treated effectively as well in the hands of an internationally recognised urologic surgeon.

Assisted Reproduction Technology (ART)

+

If all else fails, or if the man’s sperm quantity and quality are simply too poor, assisted reproduction technology (ART) like In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) or Intra-Uterine Insemination (IUI), also known as artificial insemination, may be considered.

Dr Julianah Abu, a certified embryologist and IVF clinician, provides well-established ART services at our clinic.

Our clinic provides a wide range of treatments for male infertility that are safe, personalised and effective. Let us help you achieve your dreams of growing your family.
